How Applied Behaviour Analysis Can Help

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a proven and effective method for addressing picky eating and mealtime challenges. By using behavioral strategies such as reinforcement, prompting, and shaping, ABA helps individuals develop more flexible eating habits. Below is a brief overview of how ABA can support increased food variety and build important mealtime skills:

1. Identify the "problem" and why the challenges are likely occurring

2. Create a plan for how to take small systematic steps towards consuming new foods or building other skills

3. Implement the steps, provide reinforcers for effort and achieving behaviour change (big or small)

4. Plan for consistency when challenges are presented and help the child move forward at their own pace

5. Recognize and reward efforts and progress...ALWAYS

6. Record data and analyze progress to ensure the plan in place is the right one for that child

7. Transfer skills learned or new foods consumed to meal times and other environments

8. Involve caregivers throughout the process

Through the use of positive reinforcement, gradual exposure, and well-structured routines, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can enhance the acceptance of new foods, minimize problematic behaviors during mealtimes, and encourage more adaptable, healthy eating habits in a personalized and supportive manner.
